Defunding parking is dumbA majority of the Boulder City Council is poised to legislate changes that are likely to be against the will of the majority of citizens or at least should be left to the citizens’ vote. Council wants to free developers from the requirement to provide any parking spaces for their new developments. It is hoped that getting rid of enough parking spaces will get rid of driving vehicles which will then reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Council has not provided convincing evidence showing that the result will occur. It appears based on a hope or a compulsion that driving will drop off. The Council apparently also seems to hope streets won’t be used and clogged as a result or that the developed buildings will be in walking distance of customers.
The real problem, which the Council fails to tackle, is the inadequacy of reliable, safe public transportation. RTD has not done the job. There are plenty of cities that show how it’s done.
We also need far more cheap or free EV charging stations and solar energy subsidies. Defunding parking seems about as dumb as the defund the police movement was. Such a policy seems likely to harm support for the cause of greenhouse gas reduction just as defunding the police harmed the Democratic Party.
Ron Biela, BoulderWe must recognize Trump’s potential to overthrow democracyResponses by panelists at the Conference on World Affairs, when asked, seemed to consider that an overthrow of our democracy was inconceivable. But a week later, maybe not.I have thought since Trump won that there is no way that he wouldn’t try to stay in power in 2028.
There is likely going to be another (better planned) Jan. 6. This could take many guises — from calling his supporters to all state capitals, creating chaos and interfering with voting in 2026 or blocking the results of voting in 2026 or 2028.
He has access to a huge response to do whatever he chooses. And, even though it would be extra-constitutional, the pitch to his supporters would be that his call to action would be to save democracy. Over 1 million supporters in each state capital would be uncontrollable by police or national guards.
As on Jan. 6, 2021, they would only listen to Trump. Followed by Trump declaring a state of emergency and a suspension of either voting or of the results of voting.
Then what?I think that this scenario is thinkable. It is no solace to think that this kind of upheaval can’t happen in a major country — it has, for the Soviet Union, for Germany, for France twice, etc.I think the first guardrail that needs to be constructed is to recognize widely this possibility.
Gerry Bunce, BoulderSanders and Hunter shouldn’t have had jerseys retiredAs a CU Boulder and UCCS alumni, I do not agree with the decision to retire the CU Buffs football jerseys for Shedeur Sanders, No. 2, and for Travis Hunter, No. 12.
Both Sanders and Hunter only played 2 football seasons at CU Boulder. That CU buffs football team had a winning season in 2024 and lost to the BYU Cougars in the Alamo Bowl (not a top 10 bowl game). Only four CU buffs football legends have had their numbers retired in the previous 135 years.
These two transfer portal players did not play at the level of the previous CU buffs football legends who had their jersey numbers retired: Rashaan Salaam’s No. 19, Byron White’s No. 24, Joe Romig’s No.
67 and Bobby Anderson’s No. 11.Frankly, if the jerseys for Sanders and Hunter were considered for retirement then why not retire the following CU football legends (since the 1960s): Cliff Branch, Kordell Stewart, Michael Westbrook, Eric Bieniemy, Herb Orvis, John Wooten, Alfred Williams, Dick Anderson, Darian Hagan, and John “Bad Dude” Stearns.
I am a member of CU Forever Buffs. And I will continue to “host” CU football watch parties in Pueblo.Danny Rodriguez, Pueblo.
