LTTE: Why Fletcher and Phelan represent the Swampscott I believe in

To the editor:I am writing to express my support of MaryEllen Fletcher and Katie Phelan for Select Board in Swampscott’s upcoming town election.I first met Ms Fletcher after we both attended a Capital Improvement Committee meeting in early 2018. I expressed to her my confusion and befuddlement at the cursory nature of the meeting.

She gave a knowing smile. In all my interactions with her since, she has addressed me with candor and honesty.The entire school budget is a single line item in the town budget.



Every expense is at the discretion of the Superintendent. Ms Fletcher understands this and worked within the process to ask pointed questions about expenditures. I will happily vote for an override this year, but not every year.

The School Committee needs to do better. Thanks to Ms Fletcher for having the courage to say so with her abstention – she represents me.My partner, Lara Goodman, and I recently hosted an open house for Ms Phelan.

For someone with so many responsibilities, she was gracious with her time. I noted her command of the facts and empathy for residents. She has a connection to generational Swampscott that is a valuable asset.

I watch Swampscott TV on YouTube. Ms Phelan brings a moderating voice to the Select Board. The difference between Agenda Items, Public Comment, and Select Time is important! Thanks to Ms Phelan for encouraging everyone to work within the process – she represents me.

Both of these candidates have done the work for three years. Let them build on this experience. Swampscott! (m`Sqwampskut) Please join me in re-electing Ms Fletcher and Ms Phelan to our Select Board.
