In response to the letter “Nicotine Regulations” by Muhammad Abdullah, I believe a broader and more balanced approach is needed to address the issue of nicotine use in Pakistan. Pakistan is among the countries with the highest rates of tobacco usage, with around 25 million tobacco users. This has created significant public health challenges and an increasing burden on the healthcare system and economy.
For many adult smokers, nicotine pouches provide a significantly less harmful alternative to combustible cigarettes. Facilitating the shift to such alternatives can reduce smoking-related illnesses and the long-term strain on public health resources. However, awareness and accessibility remain limited.
Research has shown that nicotine pouches and similar alternatives are much less damaging than traditional smoking. A recent global report showed tobacco use dropping from 1.36 billion users in 2000 to 1.
25 billion in 2022, with further reductions expected. Countries like Sweden, where such alternatives are widely available, have successfully lowered smoking rates to just 4.5%, offering a model for others.
Ice-Breaking Interaction What Pakistan needs is a regulatory framework that encourages access to scientifically proven alternatives while enforcing strict quality standards, accurate labelling, and robust public education. A balanced policy will not only serve public health goals but also meet the growing demand for better, safer nicotine delivery options. ABU BAKAR KAREEM, Karachi.
