Sunscreen faceoff settled: HUL, Mamaearth parent resolve billboard legal dispute

Hindustan Unilever and Honasa Consumer, parent of Mamaearth, have settled their dispute over a Lakmé sunscreen ad. HUL will change the ad’s wording and visuals, and both parties agreed to remove existing ads within 48 hours, following Honasa’s complaint that the campaign disparaged digital-first sunscreen brands

Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) has settled its dispute with Honasa Consumer Ltd, the parent company of beauty and personal care brand Mamaearth, over an advertising campaign that had raised concerns over the efficacy of digital-first sunscreen brands.The senior advocate representing HUL told the single-judge bench, led by Justice Amit Bansal, that the company will modify its advertisement by replacing the phrase ‘best seller’ with ‘some sellers’. It will also change the color of the sunscreen shown in the ad to a light yellow shade.

This comes after Honasa moved the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking removal of HUL’s advertisement.HUL asked the court for 24 hours to take down its digital advertisements, while both parties agreed to jointly remove the hoardings within 48 hours. In response, Honasa confirmed that all social media posts referencing Lakme have been taken down.
