AUSTIN, Texas , April 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a state known for its unpredictable weather—from flash floods and hurricanes to ice storms and power outages—preparedness is key. Thanks to a program from the Texas Comptroller's Office, Texans have a chance to stock up on emergency essentials without paying sales tax during the Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday, running Saturday, April 26 through Monday, April 28, 2025 . The Propane Council of Texas (ProCOT), an educational and marketing foundation, is helping spread the word about this annual tax-free weekend that lets Texans purchase designated emergency supplies tax-free—whether in-store, online, or by phone—if bought during the three-day window.
Among the eligible items are several propane-related products, including portable generators priced under $3,000 , as well as important safety devices like carbon monoxide and smoke detectors (under $75 ). Some of the other qualifying tax-exempt items include Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers. There is no limit on the number of items you can buy, and no exemption certificate is required.
While many essential emergency items are eligible, some products are not included in the tax exemption— such as camping stoves, tents, and repair or replacement parts for emergency supplies. Services related to these supplies are also not eligible. "This is a great opportunity for Texans to get ahead of the next storm or outage," Bill Van Hoy of the Propane Council of Texas .
"While we don't administer the program, we want to help raise awareness so more people can take advantage of the savings." To view the full list of qualifying items and details from the Texas Comptroller, visit: https://comptroller.texas.
