A recent blast in Balochistan has ignited anger and worsened the situation, and it was described as "sheer barbarism" by Mohsin Naqvi, Minister of Interior in Pakistan. "The beasts who target children are trying to destroy everything you are working to build," Mr. Trump said, denouncing terrorists who seek to "crush their spirit" and "sow chaos and despair" through such violence.

Allegations and Rising Tensions in the Region
Pakistan's powerful military has blamed neighbouring India and alleged local proxies in Balochistan for masterminding the devastating blast, but has provided no evidence to prove it. The charge flies in the face of both countries as they try to pick up the pieces following a catastrophic two-week war. The confrontation originated in an assault on tourists carried out in Indian-controlled Kashmir and which India blamed on Pakistan. India, in turn, carried out strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan has denied that it was behind the initial attack.

Ongoing Unrest in Balochistan
In March, also in Balochistan, 21 passengers and 4 troops died in a train siege in the remote Sibi district. The attack was claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) separatist group, which has been waging a long-running insurgency for independence. The BLA has been designated a terrorist organisation by Pakistan, the UK, and the US. The military has also accused the BLA of being an "Indian proxy," charges the group has denied.

Baloch activists have, in turn, alleged serious human rights abuses by Pakistan's security forces. They say thousands of ethnic Baloch have been forcibly disappeared in the past two decades, many of them held incommunicado, tortured, or murdered during crackdowns on the separatist movement.

The tit-for-tat violence and accusations underline the volatile security situation in the region and the importance of addressing historic grievances.
