The feud is thought to have started in November 2022, when Singh was hit by the leader of a Sikh gang based in Sandwell, who goes by the street name Geetha Geetha, following a cash dispute. Reportedly humiliated by the incident, Singh began associating with another Derbyshire gang, sparking months of tension and confrontations between rival groups, it is believed.
Clashes Before Fatal Ambush
Violence between the two gangs continued to escalate in the following ten months, including a serious incident in July 2023 at the Sandwell and Birmingham Mela, one of the largest Punjabi cultural festivals in Europe. The last incident took place on August 20 at a kabaddi tournament in Alvaston, Derby, where gangsters resorting to guns, machetes and ceremonial swords launched a barbaric attack. One person was shot and others were seriously injured. Seven people were later found guilty of violent disorder connected to the riot.
Although there was no confirmation from Derbyshire Police that Singh was involved, footage from the event showed a man in a DPD cap which connected the victim to the fracas – as he worked as a parcel delivery driver.
Brutal Execution in Shrewsbury
The very next day, Singh was ambushed and shot to death in what authorities called a "cartel-style" attack. The attackers, according to reports, used an axe to break his skull and nearly exposed his brain. The episode was believed to be a revenge killing in connection with the simmering gang war, which had lingered across the city for months.
The Punjabi gangs involved do not usually carry formal names and are recognised instead by their leaders' nicknames, sources have said. These groups are said to be gaining ground throughout the UK, especially in the Midlands... and they are thought to be closed, being heavily religious and caste-oriented, with a strong bias in favour of Sikh Punjabi Jats.
The killing has focused attention on a growing trend of gang violence based on sectarian loyalties within some of Britain's ethnic groups and on law enforcement's capacity to break the pall of silence shrouding these underworld networks.
