Devil Wears Prada 2’ Begins Filming Amid Wintour’s Exit

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has entered production just as a fashion powerhouse — Anna Wintour — is poised to step down as editor-in-chief of Vogue after almost 40 years at the publication.

The timing is noteworthy considering Wintour was supposedly the inspiration behind icy Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep in 2006’s original film.

It won’t, however, be based on the best Disney movie (the company signed off on the use of “Home Alone,” according to The Hollywood Reporter) and 20th Century Studios announced Monday that filming is in progress, leaving fans of the original curious to see what the sequel has to offer.

The first film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, followed a young woman (played by Anne Hathaway) negotiating the high-pressure fashion world with a hard-nosed editor.

The sequel will bring back the stars of the original film including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, all of whom helped make the first movie a massive hit. The first film made Blunt a household name and earned Streep an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, is also set to star in the sequel (IMDb still titles it as The Devil Wears Prada 2). The first film’s director, David Frankel, is also returning to direct the sequel.

Wintour famously refused to confirm reports of her Priestly inspiration and hated the movie, but said in a 2009 interview that it “demonstrated the hard work involved in the magazine business,” which was understandable. She added that the movie was fiction and said, “I’m not always warm and cuddly.”

There’s no open date, but production is underway — and the devastating reappearances of iconic characters, against the backdrop of real changes in fashion, only heightens the agony.
