Omaha is on the verge of making history as John Ewing appears set to become the city's first Black mayor. This comes after current Mayor Jean Stothert, the city's first female mayor, conceded following Tuesday's election results, where she trailed by nearly 11,000 votes.

A Historic Mayoral Race

Voters in Nebraska's largest city were choosing between two potential milestones: a rare fourth term for a woman who broke barriers or the election of Omaha's first Black leader. Although the race focused on city matters like road repairs and waste collection, it also touched on broader national topics in the final days.

Stothert, a Republican, highlighted her efforts in rejuvenating Omaha's riverfront, proposing a new streetcar line, and overseeing progress on infrastructure. She maintained her message that Omaha is improving under her leadership, stating, "I have plans and can talk about them, and they are working."

On the other hand, Ewing, a Democrat and the current county treasurer, emphasized the need for fresh leadership and more focus on essential services such as fixing potholes, hiring more police officers, and increasing affordable housing. "People just feel like she's had her time, and it's time for somebody new," he said.

Partisan Tone in a Nonpartisan Office

Although the mayoral role is officially nonpartisan, both candidates made their political affiliations clear. Omaha remains one of the few cities in predominantly conservative Nebraska where Democrats can remain competitive.

The campaign grew more heated toward the end. A TV ad from Stothert criticized Ewing by suggesting he supported policies related to transgender athletes. Ewing dismissed the issue, stating it was not relevant to his role as treasurer. In turn, Ewing aired ads linking Stothert to former President Donald Trump, urging voters to "say no to the chaos."

In her concession, Stothert stated, "John Ewing is inheriting tonight a great city, and we leave a strong foundation for the city that we love. We are grateful and we are hopeful." With the mayoral race concluded, Omaha prepares for a new chapter in its leadership.
