Origins of the Conflict
The latest conflict began on Wednesday when India launched a military operation targeting what it described as terrorist bases in Pakistan. This was in retaliation for a deadly militant attack last month in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India claims was supported by Pakistan—a claim that has been denied. Pakistan promised to respond to India's actions.
Jet Shot Down Amid Air Attacks
According to a senior official from a foreign government, Pakistan successfully downed an Indian jet during the recent air strikes. Pakistan has further claimed it shot down five Indian Air Force aircraft, including three French-made jets. Indian officials have not confirmed or commented on these claims yet.
Border Clashes and Missile Interceptions
India reported repelling Pakistani attacks along its entire Western border and accused Pakistan of multiple ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in Kashmir. The Indian army stated it would respond with strength. One defense source indicated that India intercepted several missiles reportedly fired from Pakistan targeting Kashmir and Punjab. Pakistan denied launching those missiles.
Claims of Casualties and Drone Losses
Pakistan's military claimed it killed between 40 to 50 Indian soldiers in clashes along the border. It also reported shooting down 29 Indian drones in different parts of the country, from Rawalpindi in the north to areas near Karachi in the south.
Digital Platforms Pulled into Dispute
India has directed all digital streaming services within its borders to take down Pakistani-origin content. Additionally, several Pakistani celebrity social media accounts were blocked by India, prompting Pakistan to implement similar restrictions in response.
Explosions Spark Fear Across Cities
Explosions were reported in Jammu, a city in Indian-administered Kashmir. Locals and officials described scenes of fear and heightened anxiety. Heavy shelling was also heard in Uri, while police in Pathankot, located in India's Punjab, received alerts regarding similar blasts.
Civilians Affected by Ongoing Hostilities
Dozens of people living near the Line of Control in Kashmir are now taking refuge in safe shelters. In Amritsar, located just 15 miles from the border, residents have been advised to remain indoors. According to India's defense ministry, at least 16 civilians have lost their lives on the Indian side due to cross-border shelling from Pakistan.
