On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, becoming the first pope born in the United States. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV. The 69-year-old stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and addressed thousands of Catholics with the words, "Peace be with you all," marking the beginning of a new papal chapter.

A Leader With Global Roots and Missionary Experience

Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago and holds dual citizenship in the United States and Peru. He spent a significant part of his life in South America, working as a missionary. He served for ten years in Trujillo, Peru, and later became the bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. Since 2015, he has also held Peruvian citizenship.

Most recently, he led the Vatican's influential office responsible for the appointment of bishops. His leadership style and career have shown a commitment to global service, and he is expected to continue building on the reforms initiated by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Worldwide Response to the Historic Appointment

The announcement of Leo XIV's election drew widespread reactions from global leaders, many of whom expressed their eagerness to collaborate with the new pope on pressing international issues. In a notable remark, US President Donald Trump described the event as a great honour for the United States.

Pope Leo XIV's Vision and Mission

Leo XIV has consistently described himself as a missionary at heart. Reflecting on his vocation, he once stated that every Christian is called to be a missionary, spreading the message of the Gospel wherever they are. His new role as pope places him at the centre of the Catholic Church's spiritual leadership, guiding 1.4 billion followers worldwide.
