Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, who co-directed Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was attacked by Israeli settlers in March. After being beaten in detention, he was released a day later. He has now opened up about the brutality of the attack.
Hamdan Ballal Thought He Would Be Killed In an op-ed article in New York Times, he shared details of the lynching. "They met me outside the door of my home and started beating and cursing me. Mocking me as the 'Oscar-winning filmmaker.
' I felt guns bashing my ribs. Someone punched me in the head from behind. I fell to the ground.
I was kicked and spat on. I felt immense pain and fear. I could hear my wife and kids screaming and crying, calling for me and telling the men to go away.
It was the worst moment of my life. My wife and I both thought I would be killed. We feared what would happen to my family if I died," wrote Hamdan.
All About Attack On Hamdan Ballal The news of his detention came less than a month after No Other Land won the Best Documentary Feature Award at the Oscars 2025. It made headlines globally after being shared by co-director Yuval Abraham on X (formerly Twitter). In his tweet, Abraham revealed that Hamdan was brutally lynched by settlers, suffering serious injuries to his head and stomach.
The violence took place in Masafer Yatta. On March 25, he updated, “After being handcuffed all night and beaten in a military base, Hamdan Ballal is now free and about to go home to his family.” At that time, the Academy came under fire for its muted response to the attack but later issued an apology.
