Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sought approval from the Pune railway administration to widen two underpasses in the Khadki and Range Hills-Shivajinagar areas to improve traffic movement. A meeting was held recently and it was decided to widen the underpasses with the railway's permission. The civic body has planned to redesign both the underpasses, which are unable to handle current traffic flow due to narrow carriageways.
The redesign, however, requires the railways' clearance. Local MLA Siddharth Shirole, who was present at the meeting, said he has been following the issue with the PMC and Khadki Cantonment Board. "Since the plan is ready, we are hoping for approval from the railways to begin the work," he added.
Additional lanes are proposed for both underpasses, along with a passage for pedestrians to cross the rail tracks. The PMC has stated that it is ready to execute the entire work. Commuters from the Khadki and Shivajinagar areas have been demanding the widening of these underpasses for years.
A narrow underpass located near the Khadki police station has also been facing problems of water and drainage leakage, for which the PMC has been working on widening the approach roads on both sides. Though the PMC is expecting the railway's nod at the earliest, sources from the administration said the widening is unlikely to be completed before the forthcoming monsoon. "Widening of underpasses will be critical work as it requires assistance from the railways.
The work will take four to five months to finish," sources said. Local residents from the Khadki and Range Hills areas said they were expecting the works to begin in winter and finish before the monsoon.
