How the Standoff Played Out
The trade closes a saga that dragged on for months. Porter, one of the team's 2023 second-round picks, spent the offseason waiting on an extension while also dealing with a back injury. At the heart of the dispute was the guaranteed money in the contract structure, and the two sides never made real progress, even with talks continuing until hours before kickoff of the Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. After that, the Steelers shut the conversation down. They don't negotiate during the regular season, and that's a longstanding organizational rule.
Porter has started 41 games and picked up three interceptions in three seasons. This year, though, he missed all of training camp and the preseason after reporting that the back injury flared up during the team's mobility workout on the first day of camp. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list until roster cutdown day in late August. After that, he was a limited participant in every regular-season practice until earlier this week, with coach Mike McCarthy describing it as a "ramp-up" phase during the first month of the season.
He sat out the first three games and had already been ruled out of Thursday night's game against the Browns in Cleveland. The Steelers also added a back injury to Wednesday's practice report, on top of the "not injury related-conditioning" label used for most of the past three weeks. Oddly, Porter had been a full participant in the Monday and Tuesday walkthroughs.
With him gone, Pittsburgh will keep rotating Asante Samuel Jr., Jamel Dean and Daylen Everette at outside cornerback. Everette, a 2026 third-round pick, got extended snaps in the Week 3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, first replacing a briefly injured Dean and then taking over for Samuel for much of the second half.
Why Dallas Wanted Him
The Cowboys clearly needed help in the secondary. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted back in training camp that he'd be willing to give up draft capital to boost this season's team. When asked about a possible trade on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Monday, he avoided naming Porter because of tampering rules but said, "I'd just say we're right on top of it. We're very aware of the moving parts out here."
Injuries have piled up for Dallas. Cobie Durant is expected to miss his second game with a hamstring strain. In last week's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, his replacement Shavon Revel hurt his knee and ankle, and he was limited in Wednesday's practice. Revel missed the first eight games of his rookie year while recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee, suffered at East Carolina, but this time the injury is to his left knee. By the end of the Ravens game, the Cowboys were using backups Caelen Carson and Ameer Speed opposite DaRon Bland, with practice squad call-up Reddy Steward working the slot.
A Familiar Trade Partner
This is the third deal between the two teams in the past two years. In May 2025, the Cowboys sent a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder to Pittsburgh for wide receiver George Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick. Then in August, Dallas picked up tackle Broderick Jones and a 2027 fourth-rounder in exchange for third- and sixth-round picks in 2027.

Steelers Trade Joey Porter Jr. to Cowboys After Contract Standoff
Joey Porter Jr. is officially on the move. After a long and messy contract standoff and a back problem that never quite went away, the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback is headed to the Dallas Cowboys. The Steelers agreed to the deal on Wednesday night, sending Porter to Dallas in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder.
