Teen Suspect Named in Tumbler Ridge School Tragedy

On Tuesday, March 4th, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. GMT), an active shooter was reported in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada. Police arrived within two minutes of receiving the call and entered Tumbler Ridge Secondary School after hearing gunfire. According to police, Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18 years old, has been identified as the shooter and died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

 

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School had six of eight victims found on-campus and two victims found in a residence, while the shooter was found inside the school. The six deceased victims included three 12-year-old girls, one 39-year-old female teacher, one 12-year-old boy, and one 13-year-old boy.

A total of 25 people were injured in the shooting; therefore, two of the injured were transported by air ambulance to a hospital and are still recovering.

There does not appear to be any other shooters involved in this incident.

Approximately 2,400 people reside in Tumbler Ridge, and the total student population at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School is about 160 students from Grades 7 – 12.

According to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, "Students and educators were victims of cruelty that was previously known." The Prime Minister went on to say that there are still hospitalised victims at this time "fighting for their lives."

Darryl Krakowka, Tumbler Ridge Mayor, added that the community is a "large family," with neighbors supporting one another through a difficult time.

Authorities state that there has been contact with the shooter's family over the past decade, including contact about concerns related to the shooter's mental health. British Columbia Premier David Eby stated that efforts are being made to coordinate an investigation into the public health system to determine whether or not there have been prior contacts.

Authorities further report that Jesse Van Rootselaar was born a biological male but began transitioning to female approximately six years ago.

Both a long gun and a modified handgun were located at the shooting; however, the investigation remains ongoing as the community continues to grieve and recover from a horrific tragedy of immeasurable proportions.
