Jonathan Joss, 59, the actor from Parks and Recreation and King of the Hill, was shot and killed not far from his old residence in San Antonio, Texas. The suspect, Sigfredo Ceja, confessed to the shooting, saying, “I shot him,” a police report said. The episode took place on Sunday when Joss and a witness arrived at the damaged property to pick up mail.

The witness said Ceja, Joss’s neighbor, pulled up behind them and came out of his car, at which point he got into an argument with Joss. She heard him say he would bring a gun, which in the report is identified as a rifle. Ceja was arrested on suspicion of murder and the investigation is continuing.

Background of Neighborhood Rivalry
Police logs indicate a history of disturbance between the two neighbors. Officers had been to both Ceja’s and Joss’s homes numerous times over the last year, with many visits coded as “Disturbance Neighbor.” Some cases include welfare checks on Joss’s address, which property records show was in his name.

Officers responded to the 700 block of Dorsey Drive Sunday after receiving a report of a shooting. They discovered Joss near the side of the road and tried to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Details Of Incident Shared By Loved One
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, said the man had run at them with a gun while they were checking the mail at the home that had burned down. Their three dogs died in the January fire at the home, too. De Gonzales, speaking in an interview last month, called the confrontation unprovoked and said they were unarmed and mourning. Joss shoved him out of the firing line, taking a bullet that probably would have killed him, he said.

De Gonzales added that the couple had previously been tormented with homophobic abuse and that the shooter was heard shouting slurs before shooting. “He was murdered by someone who couldn’t stand the sight of two men loving each other,” he said.

But officials said there is no evidence that murder was related to Joss’s sexual orientation, despite the widely circulated claims online.

Remembering Jonathan Joss
Joss was known for his role as Ken Hotate, an elder of the Wamapoke tribe, on Parks and Recreation, and as the voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill. His credits include appearances in Ray Donovan, Tulsa King, and The Magnificent Seven (2016).

His former co-star, Nick Offerman, said he was “heartsick” at the news and that Joss was a “real man” and a “sweet fellow”. Joss and de Gonzales tied the knot in February of this year.
