After They refused to disclose Abby’s whereabouts, Ellie lethally shot Owen in the neck to death by accident injuring Mel. To her surprise Ellie found out Mel was pregnant. Mel pleaded with Ellie to save the baby, but Ellie — devastated because Dina (Isabela Merced) was pregnant, too — couldn’t do it. Jesse and Tommy later discovered Ellie crying over Mel’s body.
Startling Encounter at the Theatre
At the theater, as Ellie, Jesse and Tommy devised a way back, Tommy attempted to talk Ellie down as she continued to be haunted by killing Owen and Mel. Not that Abby had survived, after all.
The calm didn’t last long. After Tommy had gone to pack, the theatre lobby was suddenly beset by confusion. Jesse and Ellie ran toward the sound — but when Jesse opened his front door, the soldiers shot him in the face. Ellie dove behind the bar.
Abby came back and stood over Tommy with a gun. And when Ellie finally did appear, she admitted that she killed Abby’s friends but had no intention of hurting them, only of finding Abby. Abby, undaunted, replied, “I let you live and you wasted it,” as she lifted her firearm. The screen went dark just as a gunshot was heard, and viewers were left wondering who was struck — or whether anyone was struck at all.
New Directions and Future Trends
In a short but cryptic scene, Abby wakes to find Manny. The timeline is not defined, but she strolls out onto a balcony, with a view of a stadium-turned-farm in Seattle. As she marvels at the sight, the screen reads “Seattle day one,” just before the episode cuts out.
The final episode of the season also delivered some major revelations: Ellie came clean with what she knew actually went down in the hospital in the first season, confessing to Dina the role that Joel played in the death of Abby’s father. She fucking apologized, okay, and I was just—I was so, so, so moved by the woman's truth, okay, that I said I wanted to come home and Ellie said I could.
Meanwhile as Jesse tended to her injuries Dina refused whiskey which allowed Jesse to realize she was pregnant. He then brought up what he suspected was happening the entire time and, sure enough, Ellie admitted it. Jesse also confessed that he had protested Ellie’s trip to Seattle, saying he did not consider it best for their town and accusing her of acting in a selfish manner.
Back at the Wolves’ hub, tensions were reaching a breaking point. Isaac (Jeffrey Wright) was plotting a major military strike with Elise (Hettienne Park). He was worried about Abby not being there, but Elise was just concerned about the oncoming fight. Isaac told her his plan was to make Abby the leader of the Wolves should, God forbid, something happen to him or to Elise on the operation.
Ellie’s boat capsized in a storm while she was visiting the aquarium, leaving her stranded on a Seraphite-controlled island. Mistaken as one of the Wolves, the Seraphites almost killed her—until a surprise assault (presumably of Isaac’s men) broke out right when she was about to be put down and led to her making a run for it.
What Lies Ahead
The finale left fans on tenterhooks, now the show is about to take a new path for season 3. The attention appears it will shift from Joel and Ellie to Ellie and Dina, and Abby’s part will also get more nuanced, making viewers question who the true villain really is. As the dust settles from this life-threatening confrontation, the proverbial smoke clears and the fate of uncertainty continues on — but the emotional stakes have been raised yet again.
