Right on cue, China is making moves indicative of a great power preparing for war.
To compound matters, China, unlike the United States, has a decisive advantage in manufacturing. What’s more, they have an advanced technological sector that is, at the very least, on par in key areas with the West. Recent news out of China shows that Beijing continues to exploit their existing advantages over Uncle Sam.
Enter the MD-19 hypersonic drone. All About China’s MD-19 DroneA compact, unmanned aerial system capable of reaching speeds above Mach 7, the MD-19 represents a significant milestone in hypersonic flight—and has sent ripples through global circles, particularly alarming the Pentagon. This system can fly at speeds exceeding 3,800 miles per hour, all while maintaining the ability to decelerate, transition to subsonic speeds, and land horizontally on standard runways.
The MD-19 is a significant engineering feat, as transitioning from hypersonic to subsonic flight requires advanced flight control systems, adaptive aerodynamics, and materials capable of withstanding extreme thermal and mechanical stresses. The drone’s wedge-shaped fuselage, delta wings, and canted vertical tails reduce drag and enhance stability at high speeds, while its engine (presumably a rocket engine) provides the thrust needed for travel at hypersonic speeds. Of course, such an engine may limit the drone’s endurance, particularly compared to the scramjet-powered alternatives of other hypersonic competitors.
A key feature of the MD-19 is its incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) that mimics natural decision-making processes. This AI-driven autonomy enables the drone to navigate complex flight paths, making it a potential game-changer in unmanned systems. In constructing the drone, the Institute of Mechanics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Guangdong Aerodynamic Research Academy—its two main developers—built on years of research, including tests of the JF-12 hypersonic wind tunnel, one of the world’s most advanced facilities for simulating high-speed flight.
U.S. Defense Contractors Outrun by Chinese Public-Private PartnershipsThe synergy between academic, industrial, and military sectors underscores China’s cohesive approach to technological innovation—it has been one of the key reasons for why China has maintained a competitive edge with the United States in the key domain of technological innovation.
China’s new hypersonic drone achieved successful horizontal landing in 2020, which makes this a notable system. High-definition footage was released by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASC), an arm of the ruling Communist Party—highlighting China’s progress in mastering hypersonic technologies. Unlike the drone’s larger predecessor, the MD-22, the MD-19’s compact size enhances its agility and cost-effectiveness, making it a versatile platform for both military and civilian applications.
With a hypersonic drone in their arsenal, and the potential to mass produce these systems like sausages, China has scored a real victory over the United States. MD-19 can be armed with conventional warheads, but it is likely nuclear-capable—or at least it can probably be made nuclear-capable easily) Its ability to travel at Mach 7 over long distances, along with its dynamic maneuvering—amplified by the claims that it has an advanced AI system controlling it—will prove challenging to existing U.S.
air defenses. Hypersonic Drones Are a Real Threat to America As the Chinese develop and deploy the MD-19, they will perfect this advanced system. Over time, the MD-19 could become the testbed for a bevy of new technological innovations—at a time when the Americans are still struggling to get even rudimentary hypersonic weapons into their arsenal.
China has engaged in much braggadocio when it comes to their technological prowess—and not all of it is believable. Yet they should still not be underestimated. In areas like hypersonic technology, artificial intelligence, and drones, Beijing has proven itself to be a serious player.
If war were to erupt, China’s MD-19 hypersonic drone will be a significant problem for U.S. forces—and perhaps even a threat to the American homeland.
