DAILY POST reports that Oborevwori had dumped the PDP for APC following a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday. Delta Governor Oborevwori dumps PDP for APC However, in the past twelve years, different governors have defected from the PDP to the APC while still in office.

DAILY POST takes a look at some of the governors who dumped the PDP for APC during their time in office over the past couple of years: Sheriff Oborevwori – the Delta State governor shocked many by dumping the PDP for the APC on Wednesday. His predicessor Ifeanyi Okowa also defected to the ruling party. Their defections marks a major political shift in Delta, a strong PDP state since 1999.



Dave Umahi – the former Ebony State governor defected to the APC from PDP in November 2020 during his second term as governor of the state. At the time, Umahi hailed APC’s infrastructure focus under then-President Muhammadu Buhari and cited marginalisation of the Southeast by the PDP as reasons for his defection. Bello Matawalle – the former Zamfara State governor left PDP for APC in June 2021.

Matawalle’s decision was driven by political turbulence in Zamfara as he aimed for strategic alliance to maintain stability and control of his state. Ben Ayade – the former Cross River State governor defected to the APC from PDP in May 2021. At the time of his defection, Ayade said the desire to align with the federal government under the leadership of President Buhari to attract more development projects to Cross River State was part of his decision to dumped the PDP.

Aminu Tambuwal – the former Sokoto State governor left PDP to join APC ahead of the 2015 elections. He later returned to PDP in 2018. Tambuwal was later linked with a fresh move back to APC while still in office.

Aliyu Wamakko – the former Sokoto State governor switched from PDP to APC in 2014 while in office ahead of the 2015 general elections which APC won. Abdulfatah Ahmed – the former Kwara State governor left PDP for APC in 2014. Though Ahmed returned to PDP later.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the ruling APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje revealed that more opposition governors would soon join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. More opposition governors set to join APC – Ganduje Ganduje disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja when he formally received some leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party , NNPP, Kano State chapter, led by the Senator representing Kano South, Senator Kawu Ismailia.
