High Death Toll and Displacement
Estimates on the death toll from the conflict range enormously. A US official last year stated that potentially as many as 150,000 people may have perished since fighting began in 2023. The war has also displaced about 12 million people, endangering their homes and communities.
Local Factions and Ethnicity
Factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which occupy the area of the recent landslide, have pledged to defend the Sudanese military against the RSF. Many Darfurians believe that the RSF and its allied militias are doing their best to turn the most ethnically diverse region of Sudan into an Arab-ruled place.
