France manager Didier Deschamps confirmed the outcome ahead of the match at Boston Stadium, saying simply that they had been notified by FIFA and the yellow card had been upheld. The decision has attracted some attention given the contrast with how FIFA handled the Folarin Balogun situation earlier in the tournament, when a red card for the American striker was effectively suspended, allowing him to play in the last-16 defeat to Belgium. No such leniency has been extended to Olise. Bradley Barcola and Manu Kone were also booked during the Paraguay match, adding to France's disciplinary concerns heading into the latter stages. It is worth noting that Paraguay received no yellow cards from referee Ilgiz Tantashev during a match that was widely criticised for its rough play — an outcome that drew considerable comment from pundits who felt the officiating fell well short of the standard required for a knockout tie. Paraguay's Gustavo Velazquez had also attempted to scuff the penalty spot before Kylian Mbappe converted the decisive spot-kick. In the aftermath, Mbappe publicly condemned a Paraguayan senator as despicable and unfit for office following racist remarks directed at him.
Saibari Sidelined as Morocco Prepare for France
Morocco will face France without one of their most important players. Ismael Saibari, the 25-year-old who joined Bayern Munich from PSV Eindhoven this summer, was forced off after just 22 minutes of Morocco's 3-0 last-16 victory over co-hosts Canada with a hamstring problem, and has not recovered in time for the quarter-final. His absence is a significant one. Saibari scored in all three of Morocco's group stage matches, netting in a 1-1 draw with Brazil, a 1-0 win against Scotland, and a 4-2 victory over Haiti. He then delivered arguably his most crucial contribution of the tournament by converting the winning penalty against the Netherlands in the last-32 shootout. Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi acknowledged that Saibari was not ready but expressed hope that the injury would not end his tournament entirely. Whether he can return for a potential semi-final remains to be seen.
What Both Teams Are Playing For
Thursday's quarter-final carries particular emotional weight for Morocco. Four years ago in Qatar, it was France who ended their historic run at the semi-final stage, defeating them in what was one of the tournament's most memorable matches. Morocco became the first African nation ever to reach the last four that year, and this squad will be determined to go one step further this time around — even without Saibari pulling the strings in their attacking third. France, meanwhile, have their own motivation. With Mbappe in the form of his life and a squad loaded with quality, their ambition is nothing short of lifting the trophy. The Olise situation adds a layer of tension around squad management that Deschamps will need to navigate carefully if France are to get through Thursday and still have their full firepower available when it truly matters.
Olise Yellow Card Stands, Saibari Out for Morocco Quarter-Final
France have been dealt a blow ahead of their quarter-final against Morocco after their appeal to have Michael Olise's yellow card overturned was rejected. The Bayern Munich winger was booked during France's 1-0 last-16 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia, after a confrontation with Matias Galarza in stoppage time in which Olise grabbed the Paraguayan's shirt and Galarza went to the ground. France pushed to have the booking reversed, but were told on Wednesday morning that the card would stand. Olise, who has contributed five assists at this tournament, now faces the prospect of sitting out the semi-final if France beat Morocco on Thursday and he picks up another yellow card along the way.
