There was a new leader for 2025 on the Global Liveability Index. Copenhagen placed first, bumping Vienna, which was at the top for three years, down to second.

The annual index ranks quality of life according to stability, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and culture. The most recent move was prompted by growing concerns for safety around the world, including in Vienna where it had received bomb threats in recent days.

Competitors from Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada also did well, and Osaka was the sole city from Asia that made the top 10.
So what's it actually like to live in these highly ranked cities?

Copenhagenites, Viennese, Genevans, Melburnians, and Osakaans are among those sharing their stories.

Copenhagen: Calm, Clean, and Community-Focused
Now the world's most liveable city, Copenhagen won more praise for its punctuality, relaxed feel, and smooth-running infrastructure. There is an everyday pleasure in life here, where bicycles outnumber cars and the public spaces are alluring year-round.

Inhabitants paint a picture of a laid-back city, with clean harbors, casual fashion, and spontaneous meets by the water. Families are the focus Establish affordable childcare, maintain the travel systems clean, and provide residents with a balanced work-life.

Practical, but joyful Copenhagen has a special affection for the small, but significant, things of life – like taking a morning swim in the harbour, or enjoying a great hot chocolate on the quay.

Vienna: Cheaply Luxurious in a Cultural Melting Pot
Vienna slipped to finish second, but is still strong in health care, education, and infrastructure. Residents point to the affordability of living here, with city-centre rent below €850 per month, and €1 the cost of a regular bus or tram.

The opening hours are extended every day except Mondays: a blessing for residents accustomed to the culture but not the crowds and stress that normally comes with it, leaving Vienna with a relaxed yet still lively appeal to call home.

Geneva: A Small City with Big City Advantages
Geneva clinched a top-five position; the only perfect healthcare and infrastructure scores. Its residents adore the small-city vibe with the amenities of a global hub.

Residents laud Geneva's cleanliness, safety, and ease of getting around, afforded with the help of a dense transportation network and the privilege of enjoying beautiful nature spots, such as Lake Geneva.

The international character of the city means diverse food and cultural experiences, as well as easy travel throughout Europe. The combination of urban amenities and tranquil surroundings in Geneva is ideally suited to many people.

Melbourne: Efficient, Multicultural, and Lively
Melbourne placed fourth and received high marks for health care, education, and culture. "In our neighbourhood, along with a good mix of work and leisure, it is really easy to catch a train halfway through the suburbs; we have great proximity to parks and cool cafes, and laneways.

The city is famous for its multiracial presence, creative food scenes, and friendly vibe. Melbourne's liveability is something its residents are very proud of, whether that's a quick, efficient work day or a calm and serene family walk, making day-to-day life more pleasant and putting people's minds at ease.

Visitors should hit the streets – and Melbourne's streets are colourful – should visit Melbourne's hidden bar scene, and descend into our dark, underground, cool, cafe culture.

Osaka: Relaxed, Friendly, and Great Food
The only Asian city in the top ten is Osaka, ranked seventh. Residents are fans of Osaka's reliable infrastructure, affordability, and slower tempo compared with Tokyo. They have so much easy access to good food, friendly neighbourhoods, and the ability to go places without 10,000 people around them.

It's a city that combines modern convenience with a local intimacy: boisterous bars, neighborhood chat, and calm parks. Osaka is a neat fusion of excitement and ease, and this city just makes people feel really at home.

In 2025, here are the cities that distinguish themselves not only in the august lists, but in the comfort, safety, and satisfaction of daily life.
