A murder inquiry has been launched by Police Scotland after Dr Fortune Gomo, a 39-year-old scientist who was from Zimbabwe, was discovered severely injured on South Road in Dundee. Around 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, she was declared dead at the scene. Police have charged a 20-year-old man following her death, and he is due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court.

After a post-mortem, it was confirmed by police that the death is being treated as murder. Dr Gomo, a local resident, worked as a senior service planner in water resource planning at Scottish Water and was formerly a research assistant in geography at the University of Dundee.

Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, who is overseeing the investigation, offered his sympathies to Dr Gomo's family and confirmed that they are being supported by specialist officers. He said there was no broader threat to the public, though investigations are continuing.

He also responded to concerns raised by online speculation in "I am aware of content circulating on social media, however, I would urge the public not to speculate about this incident.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area and remind anyone who knows something to come forward.

University and Community Mourn Loss
The passing of Dr Gomo has left the local academic and professional community in shock. She received her doctorate and worked as a postdoc at Dundee University until early 2022.

Professor Nigel Seaton, interim principal and vice-chancellor of the University, said the university had been "stunned" by the loss. "Her death, of an assault in South Road, Dundee, is a source of the deepest pain to everyone in our city and at our University," he said.

Prof Seaton added it would be hard for the university's colleagues and students from the African community to lose him too. Support services, such as the Chaplaincy Centre, have been offering support for those affected.

In Other Tributes, a Life of Influence
The condolences have been rolling in for Dr Gomo, and as an exceptional scholar, she has garnered all the respect due to her. Angela Machonesa, a friend from Zimbabwe, expressed her grief on social media: "Her intellect in the classroom was only surpassed by her emotional intelligence … We are shattered! We are angry. We are disoriented. But we are also joined in one chorus: Fortune Gomo counted. Her life mattered. Her legacy must never be forgotten."

The community of Dundee grieves the death of a respected colleague, scholar, and friend, while Police continue to investigate.
