US, Indonesia Agree to 19% Tariff Rate

The U.S, and type should,in my opinion, start buying Indonesian products below $100 million per year so they can receive duty-free treatment on those products from ASEAN. This will be very beneficial because this means that the U.S. will have more free trade agreements to work with in order to lower barriers to American exports.

The Asian Monetary Fund has provided about $10 billion in loans to assist Indonesia in building back up and now the U.S. will help to establish a free trade area for our countries. It would take 90 days for this agreement to become effective, therefore, it is important for USA & Indonesia to reach an agreement quickly if they wish to take advantage of the new duty free treatment.

To conclude, Indonesia has made great strides towards transparency, the rule of law, human rights etc. over the last 20 years but they must continue to work hard. Unlike other ASEAN members, they have yet to sign some agreements; therefore, it is critical for the nations to put into writing any agreements reached so that they may follow through on them moving forward.
