MAGA Turns on John Thune Over SAVE Act Delay

The Republican Party is united on the issue of increased tensions, and this is due to M.A.G.A.-aligned groups that are pursuing the removal of Senate Majority Leader John Thune. This is because Thune has not acted quickly to provide a place for the SAVE America Act to vote on, prior to recently stating that there are other items of higher priority for Legislation.

Trump supporters believe that this represents a lack of support as well as breaking a promise to move on the Movement's issue first. Initially, there was a phase for expressing anger via social media regarding having to delay the vote, but it has now developed into a battle within the [Republican Party] (www.republicanparty.com) that could seriously impact Republicans being unified in their votes within the Senate.

To put it all simply, the SAVE America Act is a piece of proposed federal legislation that has a large number of Congress members backing it, a significant number of citizens supporting it, and, most importantly, former President Donald Trump and his allies have backed it. The goal for the SAVE America Act is to tighten the qualifications for voting in the U.S., specifically requiring some form of proof of citizenship, plus some form of stricter verification of voters now and when they arrive at the polls.

They believe that these requirements are being put in place for the good of the elections and to prove that those requirements will provide integrity to the process; conversely, those who oppose the SAVE America Act have argued that these additional requirements will impose additional obstacles to voting for those who are currently eligible to vote.

Although they do have many supporters that are behind Trump, there are a number of procedural hurdles that the bill hasThune's comments about the Senate's SAVE Act led to controversy among supporters of MAGA and those with conservative values, since Thune stated that he would consider the SAVE Act only "if we have no other pressing matters before us" during the senate vote on the budget.

This shows MAGA supporters and Republicans that Thune does not think the Election Integrity Act is a priority, as he has placed it under continued budget deliberations and procedure, which has created considerable outrage among conservatives on social media.

Senate Filibuster Politics
Another issue tied to this controversy is the Senate's right to the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to pass any major pieces of legislation. After that, members of the Republican Party pressured Senator Thune to help eliminate the filibuster so that the Senate could pass the SAVE Act with 51 votes; however, Thune's response has remained unchanged and has told Republicans that they do not have enough votes to pass legislation eliminating the filibuster, as it is "much more complicated" than people understand.

Conservatives are very frustrated that Thune will not consider eliminating the filibuster as an option and that he has put procedural caution ahead of making a political decision on what they consider to be a very important matter. Voices from MAGA Demand His Removal.

The response from the MAGA movement has not only been immediate but also very vocal. Many influential conservative figures in the media have accused Thune of helping moderates at the expense of Trump's legislative agenda. Numerous posts on social media, especially X, have demanded his replacement, such as one user commenting, "REMOVE RINO TRAITOR THUNE NOW AND NUKE THE FILIBUSTER," and another questioning Thune's leadership regarding election integrity and who from Senate Republicans will step up to replace him. Thune has been referred to by numerous critics as a RINO (Republican In Name Only)—an indication of great distrust regarding his loyalty to the general conservative agenda.

Pressure From the Top by Trump
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has weighed in on this issue publicly, urging Thune to take a stronger lead and advance the SAVE Act through the Senate. Trump has made it clear how displeased he has been with Thune's leadership style, particularly related to pushing his key legislative priorities. Because of the President's high level of influence within the Republican Party, many members of the party who have long wanted a stronger leader in the Senate have been emboldened by his public disapproval of Thune.

The combination of pressure from the top (Trump) and the grassroots outrage from MAGA supporters has resulted in Thune being put into an increasingly precarious political position.

A Crowded Senate Calendar Creates Difficulties
Thune's supporters are saying that the Senate calendar is so packed that it explains the delay. The Senate is presently managing multiple competing priorities, such as ongoing budget negotiations and working on FISA provisions. There is an urgency to renew Section 702 of FISA, and there are only a few more legislative days left for Republicans to put together new strategies for extending it. Thune has also indicated that he plans to focus on supporting the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement and tying immigration funding to the larger budget issues with this current push.

Increased Pressure due to the Shutdown
Adding to the confusion is that the government has now been partially shut down for a record length of 2 months. While there is an opportunity for the House to approve a Senate-supported plan that would fund the remaining Department of Homeland Security, that will only occur if immigration-related funding is secured through a reconciliation bill.

This situation has also become intermingled with the greater legislative priorities debate and puts Thune in the center of multiple overlapping pressures. The challenge of managing the shutdown threat, moving forward with immigration and border security, whilst also appeasing MAGA supporters who would like to see funding for the SAVE Act simultaneously, has created significant difficulty for the Senate leader.
