Police confirmed the suspect as local resident Dezi Freeman, 56, who remains on the run. Officers, supported by helicopters and armoured vehicles, have been deployed to the region, with residents advised to remain indoors. "We are pouring every resource into the search," said Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police Mike Bush, urging locals to stay alert and safe.
Officers Killed in “Cold Blood”
Mr Bush said the two officers were "murdered in cold blood", identifying them as a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable. Their names will be withheld until families are informed.
A third officer injured in the incident has undergone surgery and, though seriously hurt, is expected to recover.
Authorities dismissed earlier speculation that Freeman had taken his family hostage, confirming his partner and children are safe.
Extremist Beliefs Under Scrutiny
The search covers a wide area in the wooded hills of the Australian Alps, close to the New South Wales border. While there is no evidence Freeman has crossed state lines, police are considering all possibilities.
Local reports describe Freeman as a “sovereign citizen”, a term for people who reject the authority of Australian laws. Police said it is too early to comment on his beliefs, but the case has raised concerns about extremist views.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese drew parallels with a deadly 2022 ambush on officers in Queensland, warning that the threat remains serious and requires vigilance.
