Air India Flight Crashes After Takeoff from Ahmedabad

An Air India plane flying to London's Gatwick Airport crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad on Wednesday, June 12, 2025. The plane, which was flying as Flight AI171, was supposed to take off at 9:50 a.m. local time from Ahmedabad International Airport but lost its signal at 10:08 a.m., less than a minute into its flight.

Flight tracking data provided on FlightRadar24 showed it had lost the signal from the plane at an altitude of only 625 feet, sparking early fears about the state and on-going safety of the plane soon after it took off.

Crash Confirmed By Officials; Investigation Is Ongoing
In a statement, Air India acknowledged there was an "incident" with Flight AI171 but said it was compiling further details. Later in the day, Gatwick Airport said that the plane had crashed shortly after departing Ahmedabad, and that it had been scheduled to land in London at 6:25 p.m. local time (1:25 p.m. Eastern).

The cause of the crash is not known and no official information has been released about the passengers or crew. Rescue teams were rushed to the scene in the wake of the crash.

The plane disappeared soon after taking off
The plane began rapidly losing altitude and communication signal 18 minutes after taking off. The disappearance took place about one minute after the aircraft's take off, intensifying concerns over a catastrophic failure during a takeoff.

As the investigation into the the incident continues, Air India and Gatwick Airport have promised to provide updates as they receive them.
