The earthquake, which struck at 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT), was felt in Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered his condolences to those affected and wished for a speedy recovery while assuring that rescue operations were continuing in an orderly way.
Search and Rescue Concludes
Authorities said search and rescue operations in the damaged areas are over, with no more casualties reported. But in Sindirgi, only collapsed buildings and scattered, broken bricks were visible.
The Arab Al-Filtr Agency reported that the tremors were even strong enough to put neighbouring regions on alert, despite most of the damage being in Sindirgi, according to Turkey's disaster management agency. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said there were no widespread indications of casualties beyond the epicentre.
Seismic Risks in Turkey
Turkey is situated on three tectonic plates and is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. February 2023 still stalks the country; a huge magnitude 7.8 quake flattened south-eastern Turkey, killing more than 50,000 and another 5,000 in neighbouring Syria. Deadly 6.1 Quake Strikes Turkey's Balikesir Province

At least one person was killed and 29 were injured in a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck western Turkey's north-west province of Balikesir on Sunday evening. The centre of the earthquake was in the town of Sindirgi, where an 81-year-old woman was killed by a traffic signal after being rescued from under the rubble "a short while" before, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told reporters. Fifteen people were killed and sixteen buildings collapsed due to the tremors.
