A day after Iran and Israel concluded a ceasefire deal that was mediated by the US, Iran hanged three men who allegedly cooperated with Israel's spy agency Mossad. The three men were "found guilty of espionage and smuggling material for a purported revenge killing," the judiciary's official news service reported, identifying them as Mossad spies.

The executions took place on Wednesday, as the Iranian authorities delivered a strong response after 12 days of high-intensity fighting with Israel that culminated in a temporary cease-fire.

Hundreds Detained for Ties to Israel
In addition to the executions in Iran, Iranian officials rounded up around 700 people allegedly linked to Israel, a state-affiliated outlet reported earlier. No names or charges have been released in relation to the arrests.

The timing of these events—in the immediate wake of the cease-fire—raises questions as to Iran's tightening against its domestic opposition and its posture after an external conflict. Authorities have not said whether the arrests are in conjunction with a broader crackdown or are connected to recent hostilities.

The truce deal was supposed to prevent further escalation between the two longtime regional enemies. But the executions and arrests offered indications that tensions were also running high and that the truce may not mean a total de-escalation of hostilities.
