Operation against nuclear and missile establishments
Netanyahu took to national television to declare that the Israeli Air Force had just made precision strikes within Iran. The operation was aimed at the core computer systems that Iran uses to support its main nuclear facility and develop the missiles procured by the Iranians. The Natanz nuclear facility, which has long been accused of uranium enrichment, was among the targets.
"We hit the nucleus of Iran's nuclear enrichment program and the nuclear weapon program," Netanyahu pronounced. He emphasized that the objective was to shatter Iran's military infrastructure, not to inflict harm on the Iranian people. "We have no fight against the people of Iran. We are at war with the Iranian regime," he added.
Netanyahu said the sites were where senior Iranian scientists accused of working to develop a nuclear weapon are being housed. He promised that the operation would be maintained for "as long as it is necessary" to remove the threat.
Tensions High, Retaliation Anticipated
After the strikes, Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said that Iran's response was near. Missile and drone attacks against Israeli civilians could happen in the short term, he added.
The United States, meanwhile, distanced itself from the operation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says: Indicator is excluded and 'the safety of US forces in the region is the first priority' "Israel acted on its own" (Video capture: Reuters) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote: "Israel acted on its own -- " This file has been encrypted and Eric Shelley has been disabled.
As things heat up, international attention remains on the potential for wider conflict between Israel and Iran.
