More than 1,000 Indian nationals have been either deported or returned voluntarily from the United States since January 2025, according to India's foreign ministry.

About 62% of those people on those flights were brought back on commercial flights but details about those measures were not immediately available, Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, said. The increase in deportations comes as President Donald Trump has resumed his hard line on illegal immigration.

Trump had previously said that India "will do what's right" with regard to the deportation of illegal immigrants. In February, the US deported more than 100 Indians on a military aircraft, and some media reports suggested they had been shackled during the flight.

Cooperation Between India and Us On Migration And Visa Upgradation
India, Jaiswal said, works closely with the US on migration issues. "Before we return them, we check the nationality of every single person," he said in a weekly briefing.

According to the US, some 18,000 Indians are believed to have entered the country illegally. Earlier this month, the US Embassy in India cautioned that even if one entered the US legally, staying past the expiry of the visa could lead to being deported or barred from entering the US permanently.

India sees US visa policy change to impact more students
Jaiswal also explained the alterations in the Trump administration's policy on student visas, a development that may affect scores of Indian students who plan to study in the US. Recently, the US has also put on hold new student visa interview dates, as it contemplates widening social media background checks.

In response to that, Jaiswal said, "Grant of visa is a sovereign function, but we do expect Indian students to be considered fairly and join their course on time.

India was the largest contributor of international students to the country, with 330,000 students in 2023–24 studying in the US.

The US also said it would "take action to strip visas" from Chinese students with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, and those studying in sensitive subject areas.
