Residential Devastation
Ihor Klymenko, the interior minister, said that residential buildings, hospitals and sports facilities were targeted. The Shevchenkivskyi district was the most affected, where an entire section of a high-rise residential building was destroyed. There are a number of people still buried under the ruins. At least one woman was killed and two others injured in the broader Kyiv region, the regional chief Mykola Kalashnyk said.
Ukraine's emergency services said that 13 people reported injuries in Kyiv, including two young children and a pregnant woman. Emergency video showed blackened residents being evacuated from burning and smoke-filled buildings. Fires were recorded in multiple parts of the city, and local officials said an entrance to a metro station had even been damaged. Most Kyiv residents spent the night in city subway stations, as a safer alternative to the surface above.
Ongoing Russian Air Assaults
There is no Russian military comment on the latest attack. Russia has stepped up its aerial operations against Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine in recent weeks. These ongoing attacks are in the wider context of overall war, which started when Russian President Putin declared an all-out war against Ukraine in February 2022.
