Court Ruling & Charges
Ismael Ramsey Khalid, also known by his screen name, Johnny Somali, was charged with multiple counts of public nuisance & distributing sexually based deep-fake videos as well as public nuisance for his repeated incidents of indecently kissing and otherwise engaging in sexual acts on a historical statue (one which is meant to honor wartime sexual slavery victims). According to the court ruling, his repeated offenses of performing sexual act upon an innocent porous statue, while seeking profit from video promotion via the theft and/or intentional misappropriation of rights protected by the local country were the basis of the public outrage.
Although originally asking for a three-year term, the prosecutor was granted six months, while citing no extreme public harm.
Why Did the Court Convict Khalid
Khalid's actions stemmed from his disrespectful treatment of the statue that represented victims of "Comfort Women" (i.e., women throughout Asia, including approximately 200,000 women who were raped and/or forced into sexual slavery by Japanese soldiers during World War II) during the larger ongoing war in Asia. Therefore the actions taken regarding the historical statue would have profound cultural and diplomatic significance in South Korea and would generate outrage as it relates to the broader Japanese treatment of Comfort Women.
Khalid's History of Provocative Behavior
Khalid has built a globally recognized image on social media by utilizing provocative behaviors throughout many countries. For example, Khalid has stalked and/or harassed people in various countries, such as Japan and Israel, and has yet to have his streaming privileges restored after using prohibited content on streaming platforms.
Additionally, there have been numerous incidents involving Khalid behaving inappropriately in public locations (e.g., public transit, restaurants, bars, etc.) shaking people's hands etc, while producing negative content to make money.
For example, in Japan, Khalid received a 200,000-won criminal fine for uproaring a restaurant and had to be removed from the location/streaming device due to disruptive behavior associated with his unauthorized actions. His remaining Japanese experiences included him being removed for using objectionable material regarding a restaurant where he has produced such videos against an innocent victim of the crime because it was an applicant for employment with the restaurant.
In Israel, Khalid was removed and arrested at different times during a political rally. In addition, there was social media video footage that showed Khalid antagonizing and confronting locals during his attempt to engage in a dispute with authority.
Implications of the Court Ruling & Additional Consequences
Despite apologizing from the perspective of not understanding the nature of his actions regarding the historical statue, observers were not convinced by Khalid's explanation via social media. Consequently, there were social media recorded destructive encounters with numerous innocent individuals in South Korea only adds to the credibility of his lack of regard for laws/rules and/or culture.
In addition, he will face additional prohibitions such as being prohibited from working with any group that works with children or disabled individuals. Moreover, Khalid and social media influencers in general will continue to be heavily scrutinized; specifically, when working in a non-native country where the activity occurs and are created.
