Israel confirmed conducting the strikes on Hezbollah positions with the intention of targeting Hezbollah personnel involved with coordinating and executing attacks on the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). In a separate incident, a nineteen-year-old IDF soldier was killed and six other soldiers were wounded multiple times due to drone strikes on their location inside Lebanon, executed by Hezbollah.
Ceasefire in Severe Jeopardy
Since 16 April, both countries have been cooperating under a semi-permanent but fragile ceasefire, and this ceasefire had already been extended another three weeks prior to any recently occurring violence. The ceasefire allows Israel to take all necessary actions to protect themselves from imminent or ongoing threats at any time, in self-defense.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while at a government meeting, stated that Israel was executing military operations with "dramatic force" and said Hezbollah was taking actions to undermine the ceasefire agreement. Netanyahu also stated Israel was abiding by the ceasefire rules, and that in conjunction with the "right to respond to attacks," there is also a right to "prevent any worsening or growing threats from occurring. "
Hezbollah also attempted to conduct drone strikes on Israel, but, Fortunately, each drone that was launched (the number of drone strikes is three) toward Israel was intercepted before it crossed the no-man's-land border.
Both sides continue to accuse each other of breaking the ceasefire since its creation, alongside the fatalities of at least 6 individuals who died of recent airstrikes from Israel in southern Lebanon on Saturday because of an order given by Prime Minister Netanyahu to execute vigorous military actions against Hezbollah weapons depots and military installations.
Regional Diplomatic Efforts Underway
While military exchanges continue, both countries are also involved in diplomatic exchanges that are separate from military exchanges in the region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Pakistan on Sunday to deliver a proposal from Iran on how to resume peace talks with Washington. Abbas Araghchi was partaking in the second leg of a diplomatic regional tour, including stops in Pakistan and other neighboring countries, in which Pakistan has served as a neutral mediator.
Prior to this visit, the United States extended a ceasefire that was going to expire on 22 April between Iran and Pakistan, allowing both parties to continue consultations. Shortly after Abbas Araghchi departed for Oman to attend another previously arranged diplomat meeting with the Iranian ambassador to Oman, a United States special envoy and a senior White House official cancelled their planned visitation trip to Islamabad. Abbas Araghchi further expressed doubt on Saturday regarding whether the United States was actually committed to a peaceful diplomatic solution, although he plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday.
